DeepSeek Harness alternatives

If DSH's plugin model is more setup than you want, these are the tools to look at instead.

Vertical coding agent from Anthropic. Best-in-class code editing, zero setup, vendor-locked model.
Pick it if you write code daily and want the tool to disappear.
AI-native IDE fork with codebase indexing. Excellent for multi-file edits in an editor.
Pick it if you live in an editor and want AI inside it.
Open-source terminal pair programmer with first-class git integration and diff-based edits.
Pick it if you want an open-source code agent with no surprises.
OpenAI's agent, tuned for software engineering with strong sandbox execution.
Pick it if you want a managed agent with good sandboxing.
Open-source agent platform with containerised execution and a broad tool set.
Pick it if you want a self-hosted agent platform rather than a runtime.
Open-source IDE extension that lets you plug in any model and build custom assistants.
Pick it if you want model freedom inside an IDE rather than a terminal.

How to decide

The choice comes down to one question: is the agent the product, or is the work the product?

If the work is the product — you want to ship code and forget the tool — pick a vertical agent. Claude Code or Cursor, depending on whether you want a terminal or an editor.

If the agent is the product — you are building or tuning an agent, need a capability that does not exist, or must control which model handles which call — a runtime like DSH is the right shape, and the setup cost is a real but one-time investment.
